Floater kits

High-Performance Axle and Hub Assembly Solutions

What is a floater kit?

A floater kit is a heavy-duty alternative to a flanged axle setup. In a flanged setup, the axle shaft carries everything: drive, vehicle weight, braking force and cornering load. In a full floating setup, those loads are handled by the hub, bearings and housing. The axle only transmits torque.

The result is a stronger, safer system. If the axle breaks, the wheel stays on the car because it’s retained by the hub and bearings, not the axle. Floater kits also reduce brake pad knockoff under hard cornering, because the hub and bearings are doing the locating work rather than the axle.

Floater kits are a critical safety component for drag racing, circuit racing, and rallying. They reduce the load on your axle and the risk of losing wheels while cornering or launching. Floating hub kits are now standard fitment in many engineered street vehicles, classes of circuit racing, drag racing and rallying, and are a legal requirement for modified street cars and hot rods running wide or large-diameter wheels.

How floater kits work

Most standard production cars have a pressed-on wheel bearing that fits inside the diff housing, held in place by a collar on the axle shaft. The flange that holds the wheel is part of the axle itself, carrying all loads: weight, cornering forces and drive. This design can lead to axle failure under extreme driving conditions, as the bearing and axle shaft are subjected to excessive stress.

Floater kits address this by decoupling the wheel from the axle, allowing the axle to focus solely on transmitting drive forces. The floater kit’s spindle and bearing assembly takes the load off the axle using two larger, heavier-duty bearings capable of handling increased loads and cornering forces, reducing the risk of bearing failure. The spindle and hub assembly creates a more robust attachment point for the wheel, hub and brake assembly, minimising the risk of wheel loss and reducing pad knockoff from axle flange flex.

Our floater kit range

Race Products manufacture floater kits for street, drag, circuit, speedway and rally applications. All kits are manufactured in-house at our Brisbane facility using CNC machining and precision welding. Raw materials are sourced from verified suppliers with full heat number traceability.
